Service Learning Courses

The Center offers three student development classes during Fall and Winter semesters, and one during Spring term. Each class meets once a week and carries one credit.

 

StDev 290: Learning through Service: Theory and Application

Wednesdays from 5:00 - 6:40 pm during Spring term. Mondays from 5:00 - 5:50 pm and Wednesdays from 5:00 – 5:50 pm during Fall and Winter semesters.
This course provides students, particularly those in leadership positions, the opportunity to learn about service practice, motivation for service, service philosophies and theories, the fourth aim of a BYU education, the power of reflection in service, personal/skill development, and learning through service. StDev 132: Foundations of Effective Tutoring and Mentoring—Level One

Wednesdays from 5:00-6:40 pm during 1st and 2nd blocks of Fall and Winter semesters.
This course teaches basic tutoring skills and fulfills the training requirements for Level One certification through the CRLA (College Reading and Learning Association). For more information, contact Theodore Okawa: 2330 WSC, 801-422-1904.

StDev 133: Foundations of Effective Tutoring and Mentoring--Level Two

Mondays from 5:00 - 6:40 pm only during the 2nd block of Fall and Winter semesters.
Students in this class learn how to empower other students with the skills and confidence needed to succeed academically. This class fulfills the training requirements for Level Two certification through the CRLA (College Reading and Learning Association).
