BYU Tutoring Services offers free volunteer peer-to-peer tutoring for all classes taught on campus. Tutors help reinforce concepts covered in class and assist students in developing essential learning skills. All tutors have achieved a B grade or higher in classes they tutor and have been oriented on essential tutoring skills.

  • Please make sure that you set or reset your schedule for fall semester.
  • You can add availability by clicking on your schedule at times when you will be available to tutor.
  • Unless you do this, students will NOT be able to see you as a tutor.

How do I get involved?


1) Go to tutoring.byu.edu and fill out a quick application!

2) Attend a 15 minute orientation. There are weekly orientations in Y-Serve office WSC 2330, or you can get in contact with one of the program directors to set up a time.

Volunteer Commitment: Tutors commit to helping students for 1-3 hours a week.

 

Please complete this mandatory 20 minute child protection training before you begin working with this program.

Experiences

This semester I finally recognized how the Lord has blessed me because of my service. It doesn't make much sense but I've been strengthened in my resolve to be righteous and I've gotten better grades as I've served more (even more credits). I know that the Lord is very happy when He sees us reach out to aid our brothers and sisters.

This semester, I've had several students, and even parent of students, say, "You have no idea how much this has helped me." Helping struggling students receive the help they need to have a successful experience here is amazing and that’s why I serve.

I love having scheduled service hours in my week. I've told a lot of my friends about Y-Serve tutoring and some of them say, "Well, I don't have time for that". I have loved MAKING time for tutoring, even when weeks are really busy. The sacrifice to serve has blessed my life.

I have grown to love teaching. I'm currently working with a girl who really struggles in chemistry and just decided to withdraw from the class. I care for her and want her to succeed and had the impression that she needs help with testing strategies to help with her test anxiety. It was so fulfilling to be able to help her and be the support she needed.

I was able to tutor someone for almost the entire semester last semester and it was always really rewarding to see the change during one of our sessions to not quite understanding a concept to totally getting it and applying it on their own.

It's amazing to see peoples' faces light up when they finally understand a concept. Recently I was tutoring an intro biology class, and I drew out a big overview of the central dogma. The tutee being able to see the big picture made him understand it a lot more and it was cool to see that happen.
