What is Cruz Roja (Hispanic Outreach)?
The American Red Cross Hispanic Outreach Program (Cruz Roja) has the goal to teach, prepare and assist the Hispanic community in the face of emergencies and disasters. Volunteers help to achieve this goal by:
- Preparing: Volunteers receive weekly training on life saving techniques and instruction on how to teach them.
- Teaching: Volunteers have the opportunity to teach classes on First Aid, CPR, disaster action preparedness and influenza preparedness to the Hispanic communities at local health care facilities, church groups or schools.
- Participating: Not only do volunteers have the ability to teach classes but they can enter neighborhoods with the Home Fire Safety Campaign to ensure that all homes have working fire alarms and know proper fire safety and precautions.
- Responding: The Disaster Action Team provides the opportunity to be first responders to local fires and other emergencies or disasters where they can administer to the needs of the disaster victims.
Volunteer Commitments: We meet 1-3 hours every week (program meetings, community service, and disaster training). Volunteer meetings are held Tuesday nights from 7:00-8:00pm, with additional classes scheduled throughout the month at various times.

How do I get involved?

Serving with the Hispanic Outreach program with the Red Cross has been one of the highlights of my college career. Through volunteering with the program I learned first aid techniques and how to perform Hands Only CPR. I felt my abilities with the Spanish language improved dramatically while serving with this program. I really enjoyed working with the Latino Community of Utah County. It is really satisfying working with such a wonderful population, performing service that will make the community a safer place. Joining Cruz Roja was one of the best decisions I have made.
