What is Family Literacy?

We have the books... we have the kids... but who will help them read?? We need volunteers from BYU to help these kids succeed!

Thank you for your interest in Y-Serve's Family Literacy Program! We are a group of BYU students who partner with local schools and libraries to volunteer as reading buddies for struggling kids. You will play an integral role in helping these kids unleash their potential!

Tutoring opportunities are available in Spanish and English.

How do I get involved?:

How do I get involved?

No matter what your schedule, there is a way for you to get involved!

ALA: One unique opportunity is helping students attend the American Leadership Academy in Spanish Fork. We meet each Thursday at 2:50 PM East of the WILK (by the round-about), carpool there, and are back before 4:30. Snacks are provided! Go to https://www.remind.com/join/324h4k to sign up for reminders and let us know to save you a spot!!!

TIMPANOGOS: We also need volunteers who have an hour or so a week to help out in the Timpanogos Elementary library. This school is just a few blocks south-east of campus! They need volunteers ANY Weekday between 8:30 AM and 3:00 PM This includes helping kids find books, reading with them, putting books away, and just helping out the librarian in any way. Text @tefamlit to 81010 to get involved!

Timpanogos Elementary also has a special reading opportunity each Friday anytime between 8:30 AM and 10:00 AM. It's an open-house style opportunity to come and listen to students practice reading out loud. Volunteers are needed in both English and Spanish! (There will be donuts for volunteers!!!). Just check-in at the front office to find out which classes need volunteers, and get a volunteer badge. Text @tefamlit to 81010 if you'd like to volunteer!

Let us know if you have any questions or want any more information on any of our volunteer opportunities! Our email is familyliteracy@byu.edu.

Experiences:

Experiences

Reading with the same students consistently allowed me to build a friendship I wouldn't have otherwise. The student I worked with motivates me and makes me excited about learning all over again as I recognize his motivation and eagerness to learn. Family Literacy is about more than just reading, but the connection found through it.
