What is Refugee?
Refugee is a program that provides students with opportunities to support refugees as they adjust to their new homes! Volunteers can participate in activities either online or in person.
Lutheran Service Carolinas-Online
Lutheran Services Carolinas offers opportunities to support refugees through virtual meetings. Volunteers can choose between two different opportunities: English tutoring or mentoring individuals as they navigate a new culture. If you have experience with languages such as Spanish, French, Arabic, or Farsi, this is a great opportunity to put your language skills to use!
Lifting Hands International-In Person
Lifting Hands International (LHI) helps provide essential services and supplies to refugees in Utah and throughout the World. Participate in one of our activities and help assemble essential items at the LHI Sharehouse.

Lifting Hands International
Volunteer Commitment:
At least once a month, Refugee will organize a service project with LHI to volunteer at one of their Sharehouses for around 3 hours. However, if you are interested in volunteering more frequently, feel free to look through their website to check out more service opportunities!

BECOME A LEADER
Volunteer Leader Description: There are two kinds of leadership positions: Lead Program Director and Program Director. A program only has one Lead Program Director, but multiple Program Directors. Leaders are generally responsible for overseeing recruitment, retention, and reflection with volunteers. They also coordinate service with community partners and ensure their program runs smoothly. Volunteer leaders may also share the responsibilities of volunteers as outlined in the Volunteer Description. For more information, visit our section called Be a Leader!
Volunteer Leader Commitment: In addition to volunteering, Volunteer leaders commit to a 1-hour monthly team meeting to discuss needs and make plans for the program.

Being part of Refugee bettered my life... I was able to become friends with individuals who fled from their homelands seeking refuge here; their beautiful cultures and inspiring stories pricked my heart.
This semester I have had the chance to hear from a refugee from Zambia, and his experience moving here. It made me more aware of the need to help refugees feel stable and welcome. I saw my good friend teach English to a Syrian father now living in America. I'm sure his services will be very beneficial.
Service at Y-Serve this semester has brought me so much joy and has been the bright life of my semester! I got off my mission right before this semester and it was so hard going back to normal life and not serving 24/7. I’m so grateful to Y-Serve because it helped me realize how many ways I can still be involved in my community and spread the light of Christ to those around me! I love teaching Refugees English and continuing to apply the skills I learned on my mission!
