Family Literacy
What is Leaders of Literacy?
Thank you for your interest in Y-Serve’s Leaders of Literacy program! We volunteer by reading with students at local elementary schools. It’s fun! And you will play a significant role in helping the kids improve their literacy skills.
How do I get involved?
TREESIDE: Help students who attend Treeside Charter School in Provo. We meet each Tuesday at 2:10 PM at the Wilkinson Center round-about to carpool there, and we get back by 3:30pm.

*A background check is required to volunteer at Treeside. Please reach out via email (familyliteracy@byu.edu) to start the process before volunteering.
NORTHRIDGE ELEMENTARY: This group will volunteer Tuesdays and Thursdays (if volunteers can only do one day, that's fine) from 11:00am-12:20pm. Before volunteering, please fill out this background check form from the school. If you have questions, please check in with Tyler Whipple or Garrett Poyfair (contact info on the 'Contact Us' tab).
Email us at familyliteracy@byu.edu!
Volunteer Commitment:
If you are planning to volunteer at Treeside, volunteers are asked to commit to at least one semester. Other opportunities are flexible to your schedule and needs.
Training:
Please complete this mandatory 20 minute child protection training before you begin working with the children.
Reading with the same students consistently allowed me to build a friendship I wouldn't have otherwise. The student I worked with motivates me and makes me excited about learning all over again as I recognize his motivation and eagerness to learn. Family Literacy is about more than just reading, but the connection found through it.
