What is Leaders of Literacy?
Thank you for your interest in Y-Serve’s Leaders of Literacy program! We volunteer by reading with students at local elementary schools. It’s fun! And you will play a significant role in helping the kids improve their literacy skills.
How do I get involved?
NORTHRIDGE ELEMENTARY: Northridge Elementary is looking for volunteers each day of the week from 12-1. Volunteers will travel to the school and spend that time with a student helping them in any areas they need or just being a friend. If you are interested in this please contact Sarah at (801) 702-7071.
PROVO PEAKS: Volunteering with Provo peaks is great for busy schedules. Sign up on this google sheet with your name and phone number. You will be in charge of your own transportation, however, Provo Peaks is 1 mile south of campus so walking is an option. Please contact Marian Janis if you have any questions. Volunteer Commitment: If you are planning to volunteer, we ask you to commit to at least one semester. Other opportunities are flexible to your schedule and needs.
Training: Please complete this mandatory 25 minute Minor Protection Training before you begin working with the children.
Reading with the same students consistently allowed me to build a friendship I wouldn't have otherwise. The student I worked with motivates me and makes me excited about learning all over again as I recognize his motivation and eagerness to learn. Family Literacy is about more than just reading, but the connection found through it.
