Hospice
What is Hospice?
People with less than six months of life left are in great need of comfort, love, and companionship. As a hospice volunteer, you will fulfill that role by showing them and their families Christ-like love through your service. As a hospice volunteer, you will have the opportunity to become a companion and friend to patients and help ease the process of dealing with terminal illnesses. Both you and your patients will be edified as you give meaningful, selfless service.
How do I get involved?
BECOME A VOLUNTEER
Volunteer Description: Volunteers will be matched with patients navigating terminal illnesses. Tasked with embodying Christ-like love and providing companionship to these individuals, the role of a Hospice Volunteer presents a challenging, meaningful, and rewarding opportunity to serve.
Volunteer Commitment: At least one hour per week for two semesters.
Step 1: To get involved, contact the program directors at hospice@byu.edu and express your interest! Tell us about yourself and what you are looking for in your service experience.
Step 2: A member of our team will reach out to you with more information about the program and the commitment required. If you are still interested, let us know and we will get you started on your trainings!
Note: State training is required and provided for all volunteers.
BECOME A LEADER
Volunteer Leader Description: There are two kinds of leadership positions: Lead Program Director and Program Director. A program only has one Lead Program Director, but multiple Program Directors. Leaders are generally responsible for overseeing recruitment, retention, and reflection with volunteers. They also coordinate service with community partners and ensure their program runs smoothly. Volunteer leaders may also share the responsibilities of volunteers as outlined in the Volunteer Description. For more information, visit our section called Be a Leader!
Volunteer Leader Commitment: In addition to volunteering, Volunteer leaders commit to a 30-minute weekly team meeting to discuss needs, celebrate progress, and make plans for the program. Each program director has specific responsibilities to the program fit to their strengths.
Step 1: Apply to become a leader by completing the application.
Step 2: Wait to hear back from our Lead Program Director. After reviewing your application, they will reach out to you to schedule a brief interview with more information about program director roles and responsibilities.

My hospice friend is allowed to request that we do whatever she wants to lift her burdens. Out of everything she could choose, each week, she requests that I read the scriptures to her. This past week while visiting her, she also asked to end with a prayer. Following the prayer, she broke down in tears and said, "You don't know how much it means to me that you come to visit me. You came and lifted my burdens at the exact moment I needed it." We cried together and in that moment I realized that every sacrifice that I had made up to that point to make service a priority was worth it.
