Meals on Wheels
What is Meals On Wheels?
We deliver hot, nutritious meals to elderly individuals in Provo. It's a simple, impactful way to brighten someone's day and ensure our senior neighbors are well-fed. We partner with Meals on Wheels, who prepare the delicious meals at the Provo Rec Center.
We also do Friendly Callers, which is a Y-Serve program that connects seniors in Summit, Utah and Wasatch Counties with BYU student volunteers for weekly one-on-one phone conversations. Each call lasts around 20 minutes, and seniors and students can decide together the best time each week to talk. Matches are made based on gender and schedule availability, and—when possible—by shared interests.
What is Friendly Callers?
Friendly Callers, a program through Y Serve at BYU, connects students with seniors in Summit and Wasatch counties for weekly phone conversations. Volunteers are matched with seniors based on gender, availability, and sometimes shared interests. It’s a flexible way for BYU students to provide companionship, reduce isolation, and make a positive impact on the local community.
How Do I Get Involved?
Volunteer Description: Ready to make a difference in the Provo community? Signing up is easy! Meals on Wheels deliveries take place Monday through Friday between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Volunteers deliver meals to approximately 8–12 homebound individuals along a designated route.
To get started: Complete our volunteer interest survey HERE!
After submitting the survey, sign up for Meals on Wheels HERE, and/or Friendly Callers HERE. Click here to join our Microsoft Teams for updates, volunteer opportunities, schedule reminders, and program announcements. We welcome both new and returning volunteers!
Volunteer Commitment: Meal deliveries take about one hour to complete. Delivery Days: Monday–Friday; Delivery Window: 11:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m.
Transportation: Volunteers typically use their own vehicle. If you need transportation or would like to carpool, please let us know when you sign up, and we will do our best to connect you with another volunteer. Volunteers are welcome to serve once, on a recurring weekly schedule, or whenever their availability allows.
Training: To help ensure the safety of the seniors we serve, all new MEALS ON WHEELS volunteers are required to complete a background check through Meals on Wheels before participating. Complete the online background check as you sign up to volunteer. Please allow around 2 weeks for the background check to be processed before your first volunteer shift. Once your background check has been approved, you'll receive a brief orientation covering meal pickup, delivery procedures, and expectations for interacting with clients. Friendly Caller volunteers will receive additional guidance before making their first calls.
